Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast Is Losing Its Freshwater
While Bulgaria watches its reservoirs dry up and its rivers disappear, another water catastrophe is unfolding underground. Silently and beyond public attention, the Black Sea is advancing into the freshwater reserves beneath Bulgaria’s coastline.
Scientific observations have identified seawater intrusion along the central and northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Particularly alarming changes have been recorded in the northern coastal area around Krapets, Tyulenovo and Shabla.
The Invisible Advance of the Sea
Beneath the coastline lie underground aquifers that store freshwater. Under normal conditions, this water flows from the land towards the sea, and its natural pressure prevents saltwater from moving inland.
Prolonged droughts, declining rainfall and excessive water extraction are weakening this natural defence. When groundwater levels fall sufficiently, the direction of the underground flow can change. The sea then begins to penetrate beneath the land.
Saltwater gradually displaces freshwater, enters wells and boreholes, and contaminates aquifers with sodium and chlorides. Studies along the Bulgarian coast have already recorded continuing salinisation and declining flow rates from coastal springs.
Water May Still Be There, but We Will No Longer Be Able to Use It
Once salt concentrations become sufficiently high, the water becomes unsuitable for drinking, household use, irrigation and numerous industrial activities. Existing wells can be transformed from vital water sources into unusable openings leading to salinised underground reserves.
Even more alarming is that once an aquifer becomes salinised, restoring it is exceptionally difficult. Recovery may require decades, enormous investment and prolonged restrictions on groundwater extraction. In some cases, the damage may remain practically irreversible for generations.
Summer Accelerates the Crisis
Water consumption along the Black Sea coast reaches its highest level precisely when natural reserves are at their most vulnerable.
During the hot and dry summer months, the population of coastal regions increases several times over. Hotels, restaurants, swimming pools, farms and green spaces require enormous quantities of water, while rainfall is insufficient to replenish underground reserves naturally.
The more water we extract from coastal boreholes, the weaker the underground barrier against the sea becomes. Each successive dry summer may therefore bring saltwater further inland, gradually making the soil beneath our feet incapable of sustaining life.
Agricultural Land Could Become Barren
Seawater intrusion threatens far more than drinking-water supplies.
Irrigation with saline water causes salts to accumulate in the soil, damages plants and gradually reduces agricultural productivity. If the process continues long enough, cultivated land may lose its fertility and become economically unusable.
This would mean less locally produced food, higher costs for farmers and further depopulation of already vulnerable coastal regions.
Shabla Lake, Durankulak Lake, coastal wetlands and other habitats dependent on the delicate balance between fresh and saltwater are also under threat. Changes in the chemical composition of their waters could destroy ecosystems that have taken centuries to develop.
The Water Crisis Has Entered a New Dimension
An international study covering nearly half a million wells between 1990 and 2024 warns that declining groundwater levels, rising sea levels and salinisation could threaten water supplies across coastal regions worldwide in the coming decades.
For Bulgaria, this warning comes at a time when river flows are declining, reservoirs are becoming increasingly difficult to refill and summer water restrictions are affecting a growing number of communities.
Freshwater is no longer being lost only through drought and an ageing water-supply network. We are also beginning to lose the hidden water beneath our feet.
Time to Act Is Running Out
Seawater desalination, the reuse of treated wastewater and the strategic storage of freshwater must no longer be regarded as exotic or distant solutions. They are becoming essential parts of the infrastructure upon which coastal regions will depend.
The Black Sea will not invade with one enormous wave. It will advance through prolonged inaction and the dismissive refusal of regional authorities to support projects of this kind, despite their growing importance to society in the years ahead.
By the time the consequences become visible on the surface, we may already have lost the most precious hidden source of life beneath us.
